Give a little of yourself

I love this song and the message it gives. Everyday we should give a little of ourselves to help others. Ghandi said, be the change that you want to see in the world. The only way we can do that is by giving a little of our love, hope, wealth, compassion, and expertise everyday.

Thundersnow!

I'm sound asleep, dreaming of fairies, princes, magical kingdoms and lots of food. Suddenly, a loud CRACK! BOOM!! BANG wakes me from my fantastical dream. LOL, okay so I wasn't dreaming about fairies, princes and magical kingdoms. But I was awakened by loud thunder this morning around 5:20 or 30ish. I ran to the window to see my lawn, street and everything else covered in snow and snowing. So what was that loud boom if it was not raining? They call it, "Thundersnow".

Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thunder snowstorm, is a rare thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It commonly falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of extratropical cyclones between autumn and spring when surface temperatures are most likely to be near or below freezing.

Well, I really had hoped we wouldn't get snow this winter, but since we got it anyway, I will just have to be thankful. It really is pretty outdoors! And i am skipping work today (the silver lining?)

Alhamdulillah ala kullu hal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hehehe, yeah, so I like cartoons :D here is one of my faves. There is something about the relationship between Candice and her brothers which cracks me up. I'm always tickled by the way the boys are able to keep their adventures secret :D These are some of my favorite clips! Enjoy!

What kids say....

..when we are not listening! :D

The kids at my school are finally recognizing that I wear a long dress and scarf everyday. So, a group of 3-5 year olds are sitting in a huddle. I overheard them talking about my clothes "Saba wears a dress everyday." "She never wears a shirt." "yeah," "and she wears a dress hood everyday." By that time, I was tickled pink by the conversation and the fact that they called my hijab a 'dress hood'.

Kids! gotta love!

The Passing of a Leader

In The name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Inna lillahi wa ilayhi raji'oon.

On Sept. 9th, 2008, Allah (swt) called back one of HIs servants, Imam Warith Deen Muhammad. Masha Allah, an outstanding leader and educator, he was an inspiration and guide for many. It is with great sadness that I give my sincere condolences to the family of Imam Warith Deen Muhammad. May Allah (swt) reward all his hard work and effort towards helping the muslim community and bringing so many muslims to Islam.

When I received the news of his death, I was completely floored. I had just gone on my lunch break when I opened my email. Tearfully, I made dua for him and his family. I sincerely pray that Allah (swt) rewards him for his good deeds and the good that came from his leaving the Nation of Islam. It was through him, that many muslims, including my mother, found true Islam. I can't begin to say how much he has influenced my family. When he abandoned the teachings of the NOI, he told the muslims to go out, buy and read the Qur'an. My mom did just that. She left the NOI and Alhamdulillah, became a muslim. I feel blessed to have been touched by him, because if Allah (swt) had not guided him to true islam, I don't know where I would be, where my family would be and if my mom would have been guided to the straight path and if she would have died a true muslim. My mother (May Allah (swt) have mercy on her) passed away on Eid morning, October 2007

Though his passing will leave a large gap in the African-American muslim community, he died in the best of times, in the month of mercy, the month of Ramadan. The month in which the doors of mercy are open, when all good deeds are rewarded in abundance, and all of the duas of the fasting are answered.

He will be missed. I pray that Allah (swt) covers Imam Warith Deen Muhammad in His shades of mercy and grant him Jannah. May Allah (swt) give strength and patience to the Imam's family during their time of grief. Ameen.

With all my love and support,
Your sister in Islam

Concentrate on this Sentence:

'To get something you never had, you have to do something you have never done.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence... 'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.'

Who matters

This was sent to me from a friend who really matters.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There comes a point in your life when you realize
who matters,
who never did,
who won't anymore...
and who always will.
So, don't worry about people from your past,
there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.
Tutu took my ears!!
Kids are wonderful to play with. They are full of imagination and curiosity. Today, one of my many sweeties came up to me as I was sitting down resting in the shade (there were two other children using me as a recliner LOL) She looked at my head (covered with a scarf) and asked, "where are your ears?" There was another teacher, Tutu, not too far from me so I said, "Tutu took my ears, you have to go get them from her." So she runs over and askes for my ear. Of course Tutu has no clue what she's talking about, so I fill her in. she laughs. When the little one comes back to see my ears, I ask her if she got my ears back from Tutu, she said yes. I took her closed hands and place them in my scarf where my ears are. Then I pulled back the scarf so she couls finally see my ear. She laughed when she finally saw my ear. Me and Tutu got a good laugh as well.
Seattle approves bag fee.
According to the Seattle Times,
Beginning in January, shoppers must pay 20 cents for each plastic or paper bag they use at grocery, drug and convenience stores in Seattle.
Outside of Safeway, there was a man trying to get people to sign a petition to oppose the upcoming plastic bag fee. I refused of course. I have to say, this fee is one that I approve of. I agree with it because we as a nation are producing just way too much waste and not recycling enough to justify production of more environmentally harmful products. I figure, this fee will force me, and everyone else, to buckle down and reduce and reuse. Go Earth! Go Green!
Why olympic divers shower after every swim....
Have you ever wondered why divers jump in the shower after every dive in the olympics? I have! That always bugged me when ever I watched the games, I mean, they had just got out the water and were soon to get back in - why waste the water? Well, after those years of wondering, here is the answer :D
According to Fourth Place Medal, the temperature of the pool water (usually around 80 degrees) and the air (between 68 and 72 degrees) are different. This difference can cause muscle tightness. So, to keep muscles nice and relaxed, divers warm up by taking showers or sitting in a hot tub.
Somewhere over the rainbow.....
Yesterday was a pretty gray day. The clouds swamped the sky spreading a dark and damp overcast. I look out the window and I knew my day was not going to be happy. I was sick with a cold and a bit of a bad cough. With the forecast saying it was going to rain, there was no way I could make big brother's softball game :( That made the day even more grim, I missed his game. After sleeping in and giving my weary body the much needed rest, I dragged myself out of bed to work on my writing project. As the sun bore its way through the stubborn clouds, a glimpse of a better ending to my day was on the horizon. Sure enough, my brother and sisters come home from the games, telling how they lost the game in pompous and glory! We don't really play to win, but we play in the spirit of having fun and feeling like a community, a team. And that they did. The Sharks, my brother's team, played against a much better team, but they still managed to play a good game and have lots of fun. Though I would have loved to have been there, I was feeling better already. As rain pitter-pattered on the window sill, all was still except for my tapping on the keyboards. Suddenly, I don't really know why Iooked out the window, but in the sky was a pretty rainbow. It was the wonderful finale of what started out as a gray, unhappy day. Masha Allah!
Happy Sisters' Day :D
Okay, so my brother wakes up this morning and says "Today is August 3rd 2008, Happy Sisters' Day, yes insha Allah!" did you ever know that theer was an actual holiday for sisters!!!! So, I went online to see what this was all about and guess what? it really is a holiday. Holey Doley, I thought he was trying to get an extra treat at our expense LOL. Well this is what I found:
When : First Sunday in August
Sister's Day celebrates being or having a sister. That means a lot of us will celebrate this special day.
Sisters are truly special and unique. Sure, we may argue and fight. But, when it comes right down to it, sisters are the best, the very best.
Celebrate Sister's Day by spending time with your sister. Make it a special day in some way for you, and for her.
So Happy Sisters Day!!!! :D
What's the rush?
Am I the only person in Seattle who obeys the speed laws??? It's seems like everyone on the street is rushing past me when I drive. Seriously, if the speed limit is 30, they are going 35; if the speed limit is 40, they are going 45. I don't want to talk about highway speeding, it's scary! What's the rush people? Slow down, smell the roses and please watch out for me on the roads :D
Drive safely now, ya heard!
The Innocence of Childhood
I recently read a book that took me back to my childhood years :) The Little Prince, written by Antione de Saint Exupery. As a child, I loved the cartoon of a little prince that could ride shooting stars to visit other planets. I wished so much I could be like him, exploring new worlds, making new friends and flying through space (always intriguied me, makes me wonder why I never became an astronomer or astronaut) He was such a good person, a bit eccentric, but a truly good person that taught even the meanest to be kind, thoughtful and sensitive. Reading this book helped me to understand better the little prince I had loved and wanted to be like in his adventures. I must admit, I cried a bit towards the end, as he left to return home. How I miss the innocence of childhood!
Wall-E
Walt Disney and Pixar has done it again, produced a wonderfully creative cartoon that just melts my heart :D I loved how the movie flowed even though there was little voice acting. Wall-e was adorable, funny, cute and all things wonderful. It brought back innocence of true love, not the over-compulsive version of love we see too much of in kid cartoons and shows. Two thumbs up!
